Taricaya Rescue Centre Visit

Overview
The Half-Day Visit to the Taricaya Rescue Centre in Tambopata offers an in-depth look at wildlife conservation in the Peruvian Amazon. Located about 28 kilometers (17 miles) from Puerto Maldonado, between the Madre de Dios River and Tambopata National Reserve, the Taricaya Ecological Reserve spans nearly 500 hectares (1,235 acres) of protected rainforest. Since 2001, this non-profit organization has focused on preserving biodiversity and rehabilitating native species.
Visitors explore the rescue center, officially recognized by the Peruvian government in 2008, which cares for animals displaced by habitat loss, trafficking, or other human activities. The center aims to rehabilitate and reintroduce these animals into the wild whenever possible. Guests observe primates, birds, and reptiles under care, while staff share stories of each animal’s journey from rescue to recovery, highlighting the delicate balance of the rainforest ecosystem.
The reserve also engages in reforestation, sustainable agriculture, and wildlife research, showcasing the multifaceted efforts needed to conserve the Amazon’s biodiversity. This half-day tour offers a unique opportunity to witness these conservation initiatives firsthand, fostering appreciation for the dedication required to protect Tambopata’s rich natural heritage.
