Amazon Shelter Visit

Overview
The Half-Day Visit to Amazon Shelter in Tambopata offers a unique glimpse into wildlife conservation in the Peruvian Amazon. Located just 11 kilometers (7 miles) from Puerto Maldonado along the Tambopata tourist corridor, the shelter has spent over 18 years rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing animals affected by habitat loss, hunting, mining, and illegal wildlife trade.
Visitors can observe a variety of species under care, including howler and capuchin monkeys, red brocket deer, peccaries, tapirs, and numerous birds such as macaws, parrots, and parakeets. Knowledgeable staff share the stories of each animal’s journey, highlighting the challenges of rehabilitation and the delicate balance of the rainforest ecosystem.
Amazon Shelter also engages in environmental education and promotes sustainable practices within the local community. This half-day tour provides insight into these efforts, offering a deeper understanding of the work required to protect the Amazon’s rich biodiversity while supporting ongoing conservation initiatives.
